Term 1… we’ve begun…

The holidays are over. School is back. And so are we.

We know you’ve missed us.

For those new to Square One- or those who just need a reminder- we are the youth group of Turramurra Uniting Church. We run every Friday night of the school term from 7-9.30pm. Cost is $5 for supper. A typical night at TUC will look like some games, supper and some time spent together as a big group and in small groups talking about faith- though this year there will be a few new segments, so keep an eye out for those!

U-Night

Our first combined gathering for 2012- a luau at Shelley Beach on March 9th to farewell summer (was it ever really here?).

Passion Play

As part of our Easter celebrations, we will be going to watch the Turramurra Passion on March 30th. Friends and family are more than welcome to join us. Tickets are free but booking is essential so RSVP to Kate if you are coming and if you are bringing extras.

Breakaway 2012

Our annual youth camp. This year at Fitzroy Falls Conference Centre on April 13th-15th. Save the date- permission note and information on it’s way to you soon.

Square One in 2012

Exciting news folks- Square One starts back on Feb 10th. That’s next Friday.

Confirmations

More exciting news!

After 2 months of talking, praying, reading and thinking, 7 of our friends are getting confirmed/ baptised over the next two Sundays! Basically, they will be getting up before their family and friends and saying that they have decided to get serious about this whole Jesus thing, which is pretty cool. It would be great if we could be there to support them, pray for them, cheer for them and encourage them in this decision. Details for the services at Turramurra Uniting Church are…

U-Night: Luna Park

Our final U-Night and Square One for the year. On 2nd December we are hitting up Luna Park with a unch of our mates from youth groups all over Sydney’s north for an epic night to cap off a pretty good year. You can download information and the permission form here.

This week: Theme Night: Dress Like Your Parents

The term is moving along very quickly and we’ve been having a lot of fun.

For those asking about the Flea Market in October, I can tell you that it was a great success! The Flea Market itself raised a heap and our Toys and Sporting Goods stall made a record $1250 for the Anti-People Trafficking Program. So well done and thankyou to everyone who helped out.

Last week was probably our weirdest night at Square One in a while- vegetable dioramas- which was exactly what it sounds like. We made sceneries out of vegetables in boxes. The biggest surprise of all was how much fun it was! The challenge was to make something from either Ancient Egypt or the Australian Outback. This is the winning team’s effort- a kiwi fruit pyramid with a chocolate sauce Nile (‘vegetable’ was a loose term!).

This week we have a theme night. The theme: dress like your parents. So raid your parents wardrobe (with their permission of course) and come along in some fine mum/ dad/ guardian gear. There will be photos.

This Friday: Karuah Oval and Flea Market

This Saturday, the church is holding its second Flea Market for the year. This means Square One on Friday (Oct 21st) won’t be in the church as normal. We will be going to Karuah Oval at the end of Gilroy Rd. Drop off and pick up will be at normal times (7pm and 9.30pm) but from the park.

Once again Square One will be running the toy and sports gear stall at the Flea Market. This time all the proceeds from the store will go to the Church of North India’s Anti-People Trafficking Program. We will be part of the fight to end slavery and we would love your help!

 Ways you can get involved:

• Donate any old toys or sporting equipment. You can drop them off at the church on Thursday or Friday.
• Volunteer to help set up the stall. We need a small group of high-school aged people to help set up the stall on Friday evening, Oct 21, from 7-9pm.
• Help us sell stuff on Saturday between 8am and 2pm. Even if you can only come for part of that time, if you’re high-school aged and keen to help, we’d love to have you.

Term 4: Summer’s on it’s way!

The new term begins this week!

We had a lot of fun last term. Highlights included—-

• U-Night when we joined with other youth from around the area for an epic youthfest. Rave Cave, horizontal bungee, painting, Wii, Singstar, worship… Such a great night.
• Hearing from our friend Amir who talked about what it was like to come to Australia as an asylum seeker.
• Our “Dress as a song title” theme night. (Photos on Facebook- look us up!)
• Talking about God, faith and teenage stuff. Pretty interesting.
• Challenge Camp- an epic week down at Crosslands Convention Centre in Galston.

This term we have in store some great new games (and some pretty fun old ones), a sweet “Dress like your parents” theme night, a night of vegetables (curious? Ask Lachie about that one!), all things Christmas, PLUS we finish the year with another combined youth night at LUNA PARK! We’re also going to be chatting about the kinds of plans God has for this world and how we can get on board with them as advocates of God’s love and justice. Pumped? I know I am.

Term 3: the winter term…

We start back this week. Pretty exciting really. I don’t know about you but my Friday nights have felt strangely empty the last few weeks. This is unusual. So I’m very excited to get back into it and I hope you are too.

Term 3- the cold and wintery term. Well, Square One is blowing a raspberry at winter and is embracing the term with great warmth and excitement. There are more games, more theme nights, more small groups, and (because Lachlan’s involved) more than your average amount of food! And if you thought formal bowling was good, we have another combined youth night which will be amazing! Plus plenty of things that will make you laugh so hard you will have forgotten all about it being cold.

Alive at the Chapel

This Friday we’re heading to Balgowlah UC for Alive at the Chapel, a very chilled band night starring some pretty talented local musos. All proceeds will be put towards a TEAR fund community pack so it’s not only going to be a great night but it’s also for a great cause. If you’re interested in coming you need the permission note which you can download from here.

NOTE: We will be leaving the church at 5.45pm to be there by 6.30pm and we will be travelling by private car. You need to RSVP to Kate by Thursday so that we can make sure there is enough car space. If you can’t make it by then, get in touch with Kate anyway. There will be some leaders coming down a bit later and we can probably work something out.

Formal Bowling

Get excited! Next Friday we are getting together with our friends from Normo, Gordon, Roseville and Balgowlah for some sweet ten-pin bowling action dressed to the nines in our classiest formal gear. Should be great! Download the permission form here.
